Kindergarten students in Ms. Gaffney’s classroom at Hughes Elementary got an unforgettable surprise on September 11 as they kicked off their new monthly Mystery Reader program. To launch the initiative, the class welcomed two special community figures: Sheriff Maciol and Lt. Morgan.
The lesson centered on honor, community service and real-life role models. Sheriff Maciol and Lt. Morgan spent time speaking with the kindergarteners about what it means to work in law enforcement and serve the public as a sheriff while also sharing a storytime reading of the book "That's What Heroes Do" by Adam Kinzinger.
For the remainder of the school year, Ms. Gaffney plans to invite different members of the community into her classroom each month. The reading sessions are thoughtfully designed to connect to community careers, special observances and meaningful themes that tie directly into the students' learning.
By connecting real-world community helpers with meaningful stories, the Mystery Reader kickoff turned a significant day into an inspiring, interactive learning experience for the young students.
